POSITIVE BEHAVIORAL SUPPORTS (PBIS)
WHAT IS PBIS?
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support, or PBIS, is a district-wide approach to teaching and reinforcing positive, school-appropriate behaviors. PBIS is used at the GESD as well as at more than 3,000 schools across the country.
WHAT ARE THE PBIS EXPECTATIONS FOR GLOVERSVILLE STUDENTS?
Our schools focus on three behavioral expectations that are positively stated and easy to remember: be safe, be responsible and be respectful. They are affectionately known as “The Three B’s” at our elementary schools!
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Behavior is taught explicitly in all areas of the school: cafeteria, playground, gym, hallways and classrooms! Scholars are taught ways to be respectful, responsible and safe and given opportunities to practice them. Positive behavior is recognized throughout the school day. Negative behaviors are consistently addressed with predictable consequences aimed to help support scholars in growing the skills they need to be successful in each setting. PBIS supports all GESD educators in being active and consistent in teaching positive behavior.

MORE ABOUT PBIS
Funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), the Technical Assistance Center on Positive Behavioral Interventions Supports (PBIS) supports schools, districts, and states to build systems capacity for implementing a multi-tiered approach to social, emotional and behavior support. The broad purpose of PBIS is to improve the effectiveness, efficiency and equity of schools and other agencies. PBIS improves social, emotional and academic outcomes for all scholars, including scholars with disabilities and scholars from underrepresented groups.
