Mrs. Stryjek’s 5th grade science classes practiced the scientific process by making egg parachutes. The students were all given the same amount of materials (straws, paper lunch bag, garbage bag, yarn and tape). They had to design with a partner what they thought was the best solution to drop their egg from Mrs. P’s second floor window at Boulevard. Then they created it over the course of three days. They all were pleased to find 19/20 parachutes successfully brought their eggs to safety! They determined the only one that cracked their egg had only one string on the bag whereas the others had two or one in the center. This was a great time for conversations about variables and how it takes inventors hundreds of trials before finding the perfect prototype. It even tied in with the growth mindset idea we talk about often: mistakes are good because we learn and grow from them! Great job scientists!
